'I began working in Hovsep Çatak’s workshop in the Grand Bazaar when I was 12 years old. Since then, I've turned this multi-layered cultural mosaic that I've been lucky enough to be a part of - and the stories whispered into my ears by all living creatures - into my unique jewellery.'
Sevan Bıçakçı is a storyteller. Though his high-art jewellery has won nearly every international award and accolade one can earn in a lifetime, he is most proud of the role he plays in carrying forward the ancient tradition of minstrels and troubadours – reminding us of the myths we share and delighting us with the beauty that surrounds. Every Sevan Bıçakçı jewel tells a story. As an individually handcrafted, one-of-a-kind work of art, each piece takes months – sometimes more than a year – as it passes from painter, sculptor, and goldsmith to engraver, mosaicist, and calligrapher to bring each fine detail to perfection - Created to one day find its soulmate collector. Few jewellery designers would dare risk shattering scarce stones and carving away precious metals to send seagulls swooping beneath the domed sky of a sculpted gem or make peacocks preen amidst a garden of diamonds, but these are the details that bring the story to life. And whether the jewel captures the opulence of a fabled city or the mysteries of nature, for Sevan Bıçakçı, the final glory is knowing that this story will fascinate and delight for generations to come.
